Open Book: Review

Open Book by Jessica Simpson
Review

Before starting this book all I knew about Jessica Simpson was:
1. Pop star in the 2000's
2. Chicken of the sea incident
3.Dukes of Hazzard
4. Clothing Line- I own a dress by her

Like many people I assumed these things were all there was to know about her. Her life affects mine exactly 0%. Her memoir blew me away. It is one of my top listens of the year. Jessica narrates her memoir and that adds a dimension of authenticity to it that I appreciate. This is not a happy go lucky book. It's her story of growing up, failing, choosing herself first, relationships, and dealing with addiction. It is DEEP. I want you to read it.

I got a lot more out of this than I had planned. I thought it was going to be a light memoir. Nope. Wrong. DEEP memoir. Personal memoir. Dealing with dark shit memoir. All of us can see ourselves in her. We have shared experiences. Her story reminded me that we are all human and doing the best we can. Some people have an extra leg up but most of the time we don't see all the hours spent fighting for that leg up. This is a necessary listen.

A Simple Favor: Review

Let me start off by saying this...I don't often read thrillers.  Why? I have an overactive imagination and a third degree black belt. I'm not the kind of person who needs to feel freaked out or that something is watching me. Also, why I don't do haunted houses.  A Simple Favor is one of those books that you can't put down once you pick it up. It sucks you in and you just have to know how the story ends. I'm normally a pretty vocal reader- I'll laugh out loud at things that are funny, but I said a LOT of bad words while reading this book. There were so many WTF?! moments. I started reading it last night and had to put it down for the night and read something lighthearted(thanks Mutts comics) before bed. I picked it up again this morning, read for 2 hours before work, and finished it on my lunch break.  Wow. The story loops and pulls and wraps you in it so tightly that you won't know who the bad guy really is or if the whole story is just a delusi...

Top 3 Books of the Year

There is a great post on Goodreads right now about the Goodreads Team's Top 3 Reads of the Year. I love posts like that because they are so personal. Everyone loves different things for different reasons. Some of the top books are books that were written decades ago, but are new to the reader. I love those. My Top 3 Books of the Year are: -Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Mass -Only Human by Sylvain Nuevel -The Loose Ends list by Carrie Firestone What are your top 3 reads of the year? What makes you choose a book as one of your top 3 reads of the year? For me: 1. Made me think 2. Made me feel 3. Put me in the character's shoes 4. Taught/ reminded me of a valuable lesson
