Here are some of the cookbooks I have recently reviewed on Netgalley.

Review: Wow. Chasing Flavor is phenomenal. There are so many things to love about it. The photography is beautiful. Showing the reader what something is supposed to look like will always win me over. At the start of the book there is a whole section on technique with pictures for how it should look when you do it. Each recipe also comes with a "Takeaway" section that gives insight to the reader. The Tomato-Raspberry Gazpacho was a huge hit in my house. Chasing Flavor gives new and experienced cooks the tools to build a repetoire of recipes and hits that will last for years to come. Although the food is elevated, it is still simple enough to be accessible to the home cook. This is a book I will definitely be gifting to those headed to college/in an apt for the first time/getting married.

Review: I LOVE this book. One thing I love about Cook Anime is that each recipe has a combination of a food facts section, an anime facts section, a culture facts section, and a this food also appears in section. I am a lover of facts, so these sections were interesting and added to my desire to make the food presented. My Ebi Furai(Deep fried breaded shrimp) turned out perfectly. Every ramen lover will particularly love having the preparation for Ajitsuke tamago(those delicious eggs that come in your ramen). Most of the ingredients you can get at your local supermarket or Asian grocery store. I love how Cook Anime is presented and how it makes both food, culture, and art accessible to readers. It has moved it's way towards the top of my favorite Japanese cookbooks list. I will be buying a copy for my niece and nephew who are currently living in Japan.

I will be purchasing hardcover copies of both of these and gifting copies to people I think would enjoy them. With cookbooks, I think that is the ultimate test: Do I love this enough to gift it to someone, not just recommend it to them?

Have you ever gifted a cookbook to someone?

A Simple Favor: Review

Let me start off by saying this...I don't often read thrillers.  Why? I have an overactive imagination and a third degree black belt. I'm not the kind of person who needs to feel freaked out or that something is watching me. Also, why I don't do haunted houses.  A Simple Favor is one of those books that you can't put down once you pick it up. It sucks you in and you just have to know how the story ends. I'm normally a pretty vocal reader- I'll laugh out loud at things that are funny, but I said a LOT of bad words while reading this book. There were so many WTF?! moments. I started reading it last night and had to put it down for the night and read something lighthearted(thanks Mutts comics) before bed. I picked it up again this morning, read for 2 hours before work, and finished it on my lunch break.  Wow. The story loops and pulls and wraps you in it so tightly that you won't know who the bad guy really is or if the whole story is just a delusi...

Top 3 Books of the Year

There is a great post on Goodreads right now about the Goodreads Team's Top 3 Reads of the Year. I love posts like that because they are so personal. Everyone loves different things for different reasons. Some of the top books are books that were written decades ago, but are new to the reader. I love those. My Top 3 Books of the Year are: -Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Mass -Only Human by Sylvain Nuevel -The Loose Ends list by Carrie Firestone What are your top 3 reads of the year? What makes you choose a book as one of your top 3 reads of the year? For me: 1. Made me think 2. Made me feel 3. Put me in the character's shoes 4. Taught/ reminded me of a valuable lesson
